Winnipeg's Sisler only school in Canada to participate in Holocaust project

Shocked, speechless and overwhelmed.

That’s how Orysya Petryshyn felt when she found out her students were from the only school in Canada to participate in a global project to spread awareness about the Holocaust.

“I didn’t know. I thought everybody participated,” said Petryshyn, who teaches Canadian history at École Secondaire Sisler High.

Petryshyn and her 36 Grade 11 students spent more than a month researching and putting together projects to submit to the “My Hometown” project. It was launc...

Indigenous medical students shine Down Under

More than 10 Indigenous medical students and physicians represented Manitoba on an international stage at a recent Indigenous-led congress in Australia.

About 750 Indigenous health-care students and professionals spent four days in Adelaide networking and discussing scientific advances at the 11th biennial Pacific Region Indigenous Doctors Congress, which ended Dec. 6.

Hosted by the Australian Indigenous Doctors’ Association, this year’s theme was Our Language, Our Culture, Our Health.

Students to spend two days learning to process bison

Students from the Kelsey School Division will take their learning out of the classroom and onto the land.

Twenty Grade 6 students from Scott Bateman Middle School in The Pas will spend two days at the nearby Round the Bend Farm this week learning how to harvest and process bison. This will be the second of three groups scheduled this academic year.

“It’s just a life learning experience,” said Myrna Ducharme, the division’s Indigenous cultural coach.

“This is something that they are never going t...

Blowing snow in forecast at Windsor Park Nordic Centre

There’s not a lot of white stuff, but thanks to new snow-making machines, the Windsor Park Nordic Centre will open a portion of its trails this weekend.

“We learned a lot (last year), and we are in a much better position this year,” said general manager Laurie Penton.
Last year staff struggled to maintain the trails because of the abnormally warm winter, which forced them to close multiple times throughout the season.

On Saturday, the nordic centre will host the grand opening of its 2.5-km machi...

No shortage of Christmas trees this year in Winnipeg, suppliers say

There’s a rich, syrupy scent in the air as people browse through rows of evergreens, deciding which one will be theirs to take home for Christmas.

“It feels like I am in a Hallmark movie,” said Cori-Lee Roberts, co-ordinator of 67th Winnipeg Scout Group’s tree lot at Corydon Community Centre’s River Heights site.

Roberts, who is in her first year overseeing the sale, said as the holiday season approached, members of the group worried about having enough trees, but were relieved when their suppli...

More than 2,000 small but significant artistic contributions make one vibrant mural in Winnipeg

They say it takes a village to raise a child.

But it takes 2,200 small tiles of art joined together to connect a community.

That’s the implied message behind a new St. James-area mural unveiled Monday — a sea of colour in the shape of a hearty tree that can’t be missed when travelling west on Portage Avenue at Hampton Street.

Called the Canada Connects Love & Family mosaic, the roughly 3.5-metre-tall artwork glows with what, at a glance, appears to be red and orange leaves in front of a blue sky...
